Juraj Kojs is a composer, performer, multimedia artist and producer from Slovakia currently residing in the US.
Juraj's creative and research work reaches to the areas of music at the threshold of hearing, action-based acoustic and electroacoustic music, cyberinstruments created with physical modeling synthesis, tactile music, native instruments from central Europe, interactive audio-visual performance, muscle-powered multimedia, music with everyday objects and toys, graphic notation and genre bending.

Juraj is a cofounder of Foundation for Emerging Technologies and Arts (FETA) and the ensemble SofIA: Sonorities of Interactive Acoustics. He organizes 12 Nights, a monthly series of Computer Music and Art at the Harold Golen Gallery in Miami, Florida. Juraj holds a PhD. in Composition and Computer Technologies from the University of Virginia. He had teaching appointments at Aalborg University in Denmark, Yale University and University of Virginia in the U.S.

This article discusses the notation of action-based music in which physical gestures and their characteristics such as shape, direction and speed (as opposed to psychoacoustic properties such as pitch, timbre and rhythm) play the dominant role in preserving and transferring information. Grounded in ecological perception and enactive cognition, the article shows how such an approach mediates a direct relationship between composition and performance, details some action-based music notation principles and offers practical examples. A discussion of tablature, graphic and text scores contextualizes the method historically.
